Mari’s Best San Marzano Tomato Sauce

Here is the secret to the best tomato sauce around, and the secret lies in the real deal whole San Marzano tomato, and it only takes 10 minutes to make! This will become your go-to for pasta sauces, pizza sauce, soups and stews.

Make sure to San Marzano DOP tomatoes, best quality extra-virgin olive oil, and sea salt. You can find them at most grocery markets. We’ve linked them below to shop directly from our Amazon Shop.


Ingredients

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 can (750 ml) whole San Marzano tomatoes, chopped

Sea salt to taste

Basil leaves to garnish, optional

Preparation

Heat olive oil in pot over medium high heat; add tomatoes and reduce for 10 minutes. Crush tomatoes with spatula, add salt to taste and set aside. If the sauce is too runny, reduce a little longer over high heat, but watch it to ensure it doesn't get dry.

Please note: always buy whole canned tomatoes with no additives. Then chop or squeeze through your hands as you add them to the pot. Do not buy diced tomatoes, they don't break down as well as a whole canned tomato.

It is fine to simmer sauce for longer periods over lower heat but if you use the best ingredients, this sauce is perfect for pastas, pizza, or to dip with a good baguette.
